Having entered the Christmas season, we ask those who find the work of the Mystagogy Resource Center beneficial to them to help us continue our work with a generous financial gift as you are able. As an incentive, we are offering the following booklet.

In 1909 the German philosopher Arthur Drews wrote a book called "The Myth of Christ", which New Testament scholar Bart D. Ehrman has called "arguably the most influential mythicist book ever produced," arguing that Jesus Christ never existed and was simply a myth influenced by more ancient myths. The reason this book was so influential was because Vladimir Lenin read it and was convinced that Jesus never existed, thus justifying his actions in promoting atheism and suppressing the Orthodox Church in the Soviet Union. Moreover, the ideologues of the Third Reich would go on to implement the views of Drews to create a new "Aryan religion," viewing Jesus as an Aryan figure fighting against Jewish materialism.

Due to the tremendous influence of this book in his time, George Florovsky viewed the arguments presented therein as very weak and easily refutable, which led him to write a refutation of this text which was published in Russian by the YMCA Press in Paris in 1929. This apologetic brochure titled "Did Christ Live? Historical Evidence of Christ" was one of the first texts of his published to promote his Neopatristic Synthesis, bringing the patristic heritage to modern historical and cultural conditions. With the revival of these views among some in our time, this text is as relevant today as it was when it was written.

Never before published in English, it is now available for anyone who donates at least $20 to the Mystagogy Resource Center upon request (please specify in your donation that you want the book). Thank you.

Synaxarion of our Venerable Father Parthenios of Chios

Synaxarion

By Monk Gerasimos Mikragiannanitis

On the 8th of this month [December], we commemorate Venerable Parthenios of Chios.

Verses

Living in asceticism, Parthenios, in these latter years,
You manifested the grace of the ancient Venerables.
On the eighth the spirit of Parthenios was lifted from the earth.

He was from the island of Chios, born in the year 1815, in a village called Dafnonas, to pious parents named Michael and Antonia, surnamed Frankoskoufis or Menis. His birth and his later progress in Christ were foretold to his parents by Saint Makarios of Corinth, who said this to them while they greatly desired to bear a male child, since they had only daughters.

When he reached manhood, he became betrothed to a young woman who departed this life, thus he chose to follow and serve the Lord. Therefore, saying farewell to all, he went to Nea Moni, where, having put on the monastic habit, he was given the name Parthenios instead of Polydoros. From there he went to Mount Penthodos and dwelt in a certain cave, undertaking the struggles of the most intense asceticism, lifting his mind to God in prayers, fastings, and all-night vigils. And having purified himself, he was filled with divine illumination. Enriched with knowledge of things about to happen, he foretold to many what would come to pass, including the great earthquake that occurred in Chios in the year 1881.

Having also rebuilt the Monastery of the Holy Apostle Mark, he was seen entirely as light, surrounded by immaterial radiance, repeatedly to those who secretly plotted against him. Glorified by many other miracles, he fell asleep in the Lord on the 8th of December, in the year of salvation 1883, being joined to the Saints from all ages.

Apolytikion.
Tone 1. Tis erimou politis.
Shining in Chios as a newly-risen star through your ascetic way of life, God-bearing Parthenios, and having received from God the grace to foretell clearly the things to come, you heal the sick and the souls of those who cry out to you with faith: Glory to Him who gave you strength; glory to Him who crowned you; glory to Him who works healings for all through you.

Kontakion.
Tone Plagal of the 4th. Ti Ypermacho.
Having imitated the way of life of the Venerables, you were shown to be their equal in all things, a radiant vessel of divine grace; but now, delighting in glory beyond all understanding, intercede to deliver from every affliction those who cry to you: Rejoice, Father Parthenios.

Oikos
An angel in asceticism you were clearly shown to be, Parthenios, in these latter times. And now, united with the choirs of Angels, do you ever intercede with Christ together with them, to grant grace from above to those who cry out to you such things as these:

Rejoice, fragrant flower of Dafnonas;
rejoice, divine boast of Chios.
Rejoice, zealous imitator of the Venerable Fathers;
rejoice, companion of all the Saints.
Rejoice, for you have shone forth in these last days;
rejoice, for you foretold to many the things to come.
Rejoice, most exemplary model of self-control;
rejoice, most genuine friend of the Savior.
Rejoice, beholder of Christ’s brightness;
rejoice, confounder of the enemy’s wickedness.
Rejoice, new lamp for monks;
rejoice, God-given blossom for the faithful.
Rejoice, Father Parthenios.

Megalynarion
Rejoice, imitator of the Venerables; rejoice, true model for monks; rejoice, you who grant the workings of miracles to those who devoutly honor you, O Parthenios.
