The Icon Ecumenical Patriarch Gregory V Gifted To Metropolitan Germanos of Old Patras

The Sacred Icon of the Panagia Stavrokratousa (Cross-Holder), which was given by the Hieromartyr Patriarch Gregory V to Metropolitan Germanos of Old Patras. This Icon accompanied the Metropolitan throughout his life and continues to accompany him to this day near the larnax with his relics.

Ecumenical Patriarch Gregory V was hanged by the Turks on April 10th 1821, in retaliation for the War for Independence initiated by the Greeks a few days earlier as proclaimed by Metropolitan Germanos of Old Patras and his blessing of the flag of the revolution at the Monastery of Hagia Lavra.
