Papa-Tychon and Hatzi-George, Ascetics of Mount Athos, Canonized by the Ecumenical Patriarchate

 

With feelings of deep compunction and spiritual joy, the Orthodox Church welcomes the official recognition of two new Saints.

The Ecumenical Patriarchate, under the presidency of His All-Holiness the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, proceeded to the canonization of Venerable Tychon the Russian and Venerable Hatzi-George the Athonite, confirming in the conscience of the fullness of the Church what the faithful had experienced for decades.

Patriarchate of Alexandria Canonizes Two New Saints - Saint Sylvestor of Alexandria and Venerable Chrysostomos Papasarantopoulos

The canonization of two great figures of the Patriarchate of Alexandria, our Holy Father, Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria, Sylvester, and our Venerable and God-fearing Father Chrysostomos Papasarantopoulos, was carried out today by the Sacred Synod of the Second-Throne Patriarchate, which is meeting for the second day in Alexandria, under the Presidency of His Beatitude Patriarch Theodoros II of Alexandria and All Africa.

Saint Sylvester, Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria, came from the great island of Crete. During his Patriarchate – 1569 to 1590 – the Church of Alexandria was at its peak. He will be commemorated annually on February 19th.

Two Athonite Elders, Dionysios of Kolitsou and Petronios of Prodromou, Are Canonized by the Ecumenical Patriarchate

The Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate announced the following canonizations of two renowned Athonite Elders of Romanian descent on August 31st 2025:

"The Holy and Sacred Synod continued its work on the 30th and 31st of August 2025, under the presidency of His All-Holiness, having thoroughly examined the considerations of the matters listed in the daily agenda, upon which the appropriate decisions were made...

It also unanimously decided, upon the recommendation of the Canonical Commission, to include in the Church’s Hagiologion those who as ascetics lived a venerable life on Mount Athos: Dionysios of Vatopaidi, who resided at the Sacred Cell of Saint George of Kolitsou, and Hieromonk Petronios, Dikaios of the Sacred Skete of the Honorable Forerunner, under the Sacred Monastery of Great Lavra. The commemoration of the former will be celebrated on May 11th and the latter on February 24th of each year.

His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew presided over the Service of the Ceremony of the Signing of the Patriarchal and Synodal Act of Canonization of the new Saint in the calendar of the Orthodox Church, Father Demetrios Gagastathis, which took place on the afternoon of Saturday, August 30, 2025, in the Patriarchal Church of Saint George in the Phanar. At that time he addressed the following words to the people present, among whom was Metropolitan Chrysostomos of Trikki, who also addressed the congregation, and a number of faithful with him from Trikala, who had originally proposed his canonization.

Today, Saturday, August 30, 2025, His Eminence Metropolitan Chrysostomos of Trikki, Gardiki and Pyli, accompanied by Priests, the President of Urban Development of the Municipality of Trikala, as well as a multitude of pilgrims from Trikala, paid a visit to His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew at the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

His Eminence, with emotion and gratitude, thanked His All-Holiness for the great blessing of the official canonization of Saint Demetrios Gagastathis, expressing the thanks of the faithful people of Trikala (see his words below).

He also particularly thanked the members of the Patriarchal Holy Synod, who were present during this sacred meeting.

Papa-Demetrios Gagastathis Has Been Canonized by the Ecumenical Patriarchate

Joyfully, the bells are ringing today at the Sacred Metropolis of Trikki, Gardiki and Pyli with the news coming from the Ecumenical Patriarchate, who accepted today, Wednesday, July 9, 2025, the relevant dossier and inscribed Protopresbyter Demetrios Gagastathis in the Hagiologion of the Orthodox Church. 

It should be noted that the Permanent Sacred Synod of the Church of Greece, during its session on March 11, 2025, unanimously accepted the proposal for the classification of the late Protopresbyter Demetrios Gagastathis (+ January 29, 1975) into the Hagiologion of the Church, and submitted a relevant request to His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew.

Papa-Demetrios Gagastathis Unanimously Proposed for Sainthood by the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece

The Sacred Metropolis of Trikki, Gardiki and Pyli announced with deep emotion that the Permanent Holy Synod of the Church of Greece, during its session on March 11, 2025, unanimously accepted the proposal for the classification of the late Protopresbyter Demetrios Gagastathis in the Hagiological Registery of the Church, and submitted a relevant request to His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew.

The official synodal document states:

 

A submitted request of His Eminence Metropolitan of Trikki, Gardiki and Pyli, Mr. Chrysostomos.

It was decided to inscribe in the Hagiological Registery of the Church the priest Demetrios Gagastathis, a man universally acknowledged by the fullness of Christians for his holiness and Orthodox life.

January 29, the day of his repose, was designated as his day of commemoration.

Papa-Demetri, as the people affectionately called him, was a priest of prayer, humility and unceasing ministry.

The fame of his holiness remains alive, and a multitude of believers continue to resort to his prayers.

The Sacred Metropolis of Trikki, Gardiki and Pyli, with prayer and reverence, awaits the decision of the Mother Church, through His All-Holiness the Ecumenical Patriarch, for the official inscription of the blessed priest among the Saints.

Romanian Orthodox Church Canonizes 16 Saints of the 20th Century

On 11-12 July 2024, the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church held its working sessions at Patriarch Teoctist Aula Magna of the Patriarchal Palace under the chairmanship of His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel. Among other things discussed, the Holy Synod approved the canonization of 16 Romanian Confessors, Martyrs and Spiritual Fathers of the 20th century.

On Monday evening, 3 February 2025, Patriarchal Auxiliary Bishop Varlaam of Ploiești, secretary of the Holy Synod, officiated the final Memorial Service for the 16 newly canonized Orthodox Confessors and Martyrs of the 20th century ahead of their official proclamation as Saints.

“We are the ones in need of the prayers and intercession of these chosen ones of God,” the Bishop emphasized during the Memorial Service held at the Patriarchal Cathedral in Bucharest following Vespers.

Reflecting on the significance of the memorial service preceding the formal canonization ceremony, Bishop Varlaam underscored that all people are called to holiness:

“This service highlights the truth that all people are called to holiness, and those who strive for it, with God’s help, attain it. In the Book of Leviticus, God commands His chosen people: ‘I am the Lord your God; sanctify yourselves, and you shall be holy, for I, the Lord your God, am holy.’”

Hieromonk Christophoros Papoulakos Has Been Canonized by the Ecumenical Patriarchate

Hieromonk Christophoros (Papoulakos) was numbered among the Saints of the Orthodox Church with an official proclamation of his canonization by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople on August 30th 2024, during a meeting of the Holy and Sacred Synod.

Christophoros Panagiotopoulos, known as Papoulakos (born in Armpounas of Achaia in 1770 and died in Andros on January 18th 1861), was a Greek Orthodox monk, missionary and preacher.

It should be noted that in May 2023, the Synodal Committee on Nomocanonical and Dogmatic Issues of the Church of Greece, in its meeting, gave a positive recommendation for the canonization of Papoulakos.

The suggestion went to the Permanent Holy Synod who in turn recorded Saint Papoulakos in the Hagiologion of the Church and a little while ago it was approved by the Patriarchate.

The File for the Canonization of Eldress Makaria of Mount Amomon Has Been Submitted

According to the exclusive information of ope.gr and the journalist Demetrios Stroumbakos, Metropolitan Kyrillos of Kifissia, Amarousi, Oropou and Marathon submitted a file to the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece which contains the information regarding the Canonization of Eldress Makaria Desypris, who was the one who discovered the Sacred Relic of Saint Ephraim of Nea Makri in January 1950.

This morning (May 30, 2024) the Metropolitan officiated at the Monastery of Saint Ephraim, on the occasion of the joyous event of the deposit of the file for the canonization of Eldress Makaria, which will then be transferred from the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece to the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

Patriarchate of Romania Proposes Four New Saints for Canonization by the Ecumenical Patriarchate

 

 

The Synod of the Metropolis of Muntenia and Dobruja met on May 20th 2024 at the Patriarchal Residence in Bucharest, on which occasion Patriarch Daniel announced that the founders of the Romanian Skete of the Honorable Forerunner (Prodromou) on Mount Athos are proposed to be canonized by the Ecumenical Patriarchate: Nektarios the Protopsaltis and Nephon of Prodromou.

The most important item on the agenda of the meeting was the approval of the liturgical texts that will accompany the canonization proposal of Venerable Nektarios the Protopsaltis to the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

"This Nektarios the Protopsaltis, or Nektarios the Vlach, was one of the greatest Romanian hesychasts who lived on Holy Mount Athos," explained Patriarch Daniel.

"He is generally known and appreciated not only by Romanians from Athos, but also by other residents of other ethnicities, and we also saw receptivity from the Ecumenical Patriarchate, because they also said that he was a great chanter, and he was called The Nightingale of Holy Mount Athos."

The Canonization of Saint Antipas of Calapodesti

Saint Antipas of Calapodesti (also known as Saint Antipas the Athonite or Saint Antipas the Hesychast or Saint Antipas of Valaam), reposed at Valaam Monastery on January 10, 1882. Having previously been a monk of Mount Athos, those who first honored him as a saint were the Russian monks of the Monastery of Saint Panteleimon, who of their own accord listed his name "Cuviosul ieroschimonah Antipa Atonitul" (Venerable Hieroschemamonk Antipas the Athonite) in the Russian Menaion for the month of January (p. 46) under January 10th. This unofficial canonization took place in 1906, a mere 24 years after his repose. This was done because he had a reputation for holiness among the Athonite Russians, especially because of his miracles which took place among the Athonite monks during his lifetime. Many were still alive who knew of his virtues and holiness and miracles, including his disciples. Furthermore, a disciple of Saint Antipas, Hieromonk Pimen (later archimandrite and abbot of the Pafnutiev Borovsky Monastery), wrote a biography of Saint Antipas in Russian right after his repose and which was first printed in 1883, in Saint Petersburg (and republished ten years later, in the same place). No doubt this publication, which was circulated in Russia and Finland, as well as on Mount Athos, added to Saint Antipas' reputation for holiness spreading.

Two New Saints Canonized by the Ecumenical Patriarchate - Elders Gervasios Paraskevopoulos and Athanasios Hamakiotis

The Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate has canonized two new Saints of the Orthodox Church today, the 16th of November 2023. The announcement of the canonization of Elder Gervasios Paraskevopoulos (+ June 30, 1964) was announced with great joy and after much anticipation by the Metropolis of Patras, while the canonization of Elder Athanasios Hamakiotis (+ August 17, 1967) was joyfully announced by the Metropolis of Kifisia, Amarousion and Oropos. The announcements are translated below:

Announcement of the Sacred Metropolis of Patras

A day of celebration and cheerfulness dawned for the city of Patras. Joyful news and glad tidings arrived from the Queen of the cities and like a bright lightning flashed across the sky and the ears of the people of Patras were filled with the voice of the Patriarch of the Nation, the renowned Bartholomew, that the sanctified spiritual father and teacher of Patras, Gervasios the sign-bearer, was ranked officially in the list of the Saints of the Orthodox Church.

Hearts leaped, eyes shed tears, bells rang joyfully, on hearing the joyous message.

Doxologies were uttered to the highest heavens, people with angels spiritually celebrate.

The First-Called welcomes Gervasios into the holy chorus of the Saints of Patras.

The birthplace of Gervasios, the children of Arcadia, like deer leap for joy.

The High Priest of Patras, together with the charitable Sacred Clergy and the Saint-loving and God-loving People, glorify God with thankful songs and sacred hymns, and the First of Orthodoxy and the Nation, His All-Holiness and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, they gratefully thank and most reverently kiss His Holy right hand, entreating the Lord for His long life, to the glory of God and of Ecumenical Orthodoxy, and with Him they give thanks from the bottom of their hearts to the renowned Holy and Sacred Synod.

● The renowned and venerable Saint Gervasios of Patras, saw the light of the visible sun, in mountainous Arcadia, in the beautiful village of Granitsa (Nymphasia today), in the year 1877.

As a child, he was orphaned by his mother and despised by people. The Panagia was his comfort, in the Monastery of Kernitsa near his village. "My God", once said the little George (that was his baptismal name), seeing the Saints in the frescoes of the Monastery, "My God, make me stick to the wall too."

Years passed since then and God heard his prayer and supplication and fulfilled his request.

Little George Paraskevopoulos, after many adventures, hardships, tears and efforts, arrived in Patras and knocked on the door of the late Metropolitan of Patras Hierotheos Metropoulos of Arcadia, who now became his protector. At the funeral of Hierotheos, which was performed in Patras by Saint Nektarios, George met Saint Nektarios, and he studied as a deacon in Rizarios protected by Saint Nektarios. He finished the Theological School and emerged as a wise and hierophant priest, who shone as an Army Chaplain in the Balkan wars, as a Preacher of Patras, as Chancellor of the renowned Archbishop Chrysanthos, as a protector of orphans and widows, as a nurturer of the penitent, as a father and intercessor of persecuted refugees, as a founder of Catechetical Schools, Camps and Creative Development Schools, a vigilant teacher of the young, tireless spiritual father and sign-bearer by the grace of God, while he was still alive.

He reposed on the day of the Holy Apostles in 1964. Thousands of now orphaned people mourned him and sent him to eternity, chanting "Agios" ["Saint"]. He rests in his beloved place, in Saint Paraskevi in the Sychaina Camp, which he founded.

In 2014, His Eminence Metropolitan Chrysostomos of Patras, on the completion of 50 years since his repose, transferred his Relics, in the presence of other Metropolitans and thousands of people in Patras, who sang resurrection hymns and with joy of soul and heart exclaimed: "Agios, Agios" showering with flowers and tears his holy Relics.

● Then His Eminence Metropolitan Chrysostomos of Patras took the necessary actions for the canonization of Father Gervasios and after the opinion of the authority of the Synodal Committee on Doctrinal and Legal issues and the unanimous Decision of the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece, the File was sent to the Ecumenical Patriarchate, in order to reach the auspicious day, which by divine inspiration, His All-Holiness and Ecumenical Patriarch Mr. Bartholomew, was proposed today, 11/16/2023, at the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Patriarchate and the official ranking of Saint Gervasios of Patras in the lists of the Saints of the Eastern Orthodox Church was decided.

Wherefore the renowned and sacred Clergy of the Apostolic Metropolis of Patras and the pious, God-loving and Saint-loving People, honoring Gervasios, with a rejoicing heart, bless him by chanting:

"Rejoice divine offspring of Arcadia and the sacred treasure of the Church, rejoice divine teacher of the people of Patras, godly-minded Gervasios, with protection cover your children."

And we entreat God with raised hands in supplication, on behalf of the First of Orthodoxy and Nation, saying:

"Lord, through the intercessions of Saint Gervasios, keep our Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew in good health for many years and have mercy and save us all."

Announcement of the Sacred Metropolis of Kifisia, Amarousion and Oropos

The Holy and Sacred Synod of the Revered Ecumenical Throne of Constantinople, under the presidency of His All-Holiness the Ecumenical Patriarch Mr. Bartholomew, during the Session of November 16, 2023, decided on the classification into the Hagiologion of the Orthodox Church the Hieromonk Athanasios (Hamakiotis), founder of the Sacred Hesychasterion of Panagia Faneromeni in Rodopolis of Attica and for many years the priest of the historic Sacred Church of Panagia Neranziotissa in Amarousio.

Our Sacred Metropolis delights and rejoices in hearing the above Decision of the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. The celebration of his memory was set for the 17th of August of each year, the day of his venerable repose, and on the 23rd of October, the day of the translation of his sacred relics.

Three New Saints Canonized by the Patriarchate of Antioch

The Holy Synod of the Patriarchate of Antioch, which gathered on October 19th 2023 in Balamond, Lebanon for their Fall Session, under the presidency of His Beatitude Patriarch John X of Antioch and All the East, has canonized the Hieromartyrs Father Nicholas Khashi (+ 1917), and his son Father Habib Khashi (+ 1948), two Damascene priests who martyred for the faith in the last century, together with Bishop Raphael (Hawaweeny) of Brooklyn (+ 1915).

Eldress Gabrielia Has Been Canonized by the Ecumenical Patriarchate

At the suggestion and exhortation of His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, the Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate unanimously decided on the canonization of the Most Venerable Nun Gabrielia Papagiannis to be among those listed in the Hagiologion of the Eastern Orthodox Church. This took place on Tuesday, October 3, 2023.

His Eminence Metropolitan Kyrillos of Rhodes was commissioned by the Sacred Metropolis of Leros, Kalymnos and Astypalaia to compose her Sacred Service. Eldress Gabrielia reposed in Leros on March 28, 1992.

Patriarchate of Antioch Will Canonize Two New Saints This Fall

Patriarch John X of Antioch and All the East declared during the Divine Liturgy he presided over on the occasion of the Feast of the Nativity of the Theotokos at Saydnaya Monastery in Syria (9/8/23), that the sessions of the Holy Synod will be officially initiated on October 18th of 2023 during which many topics will be raised. One of the most important topics is that the Holy Synod is heading towards canonizing the Hieromartyrs Father Nicholas Khashi, and his son Father Habib Khashi, two Damascene priests who martyred for the faith in the last century.

As a layman, Father Nicholas was an activist for the return of the Patriarchate of Antioch, which had been under Greek rule since the Melkite Catholic schism, to Arab control and was active in the establishment and development of schools for the community. He was then ordained to the priesthood, where he served the Archdiocese of Damascus. Patriarch Meletios (Dumani) then commissioned him as the overseer of the Metropolis of Mersin, whose bishop Alexander (Tahan) had abandoned it due to the poverty and unrest he was experiencing. In Mersin, Father Nicholas succeeded in reuniting his scattered flock and caring for and strengthening the faithful, who were subjected to various forms of persecution and ethnic cleansing. The Turkish authorities became disillusioned with Father Nicholas and arrested him based on the slander against him, then tortured him until he was martyred.

All Saints Canonized Under the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Bartholomew I (1991 - Present)

Since Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew became Patriarch of Constantinople on October 22, 1991, he has not ceased to officially recognize various Saints that have been submitted to him for canonization. This is an action he inherited from his predecessors, especially Patriarch Athenagoras, who beginning in 1955 recognized nine Saints as part of a renewal of Orthodox spirituality, and this action coincided with such tragedies as the Septembriana looting in Istanbul and the political problems in Cyprus, which demoralized the Orthodox of those regions and forced them to emigrate from their homelands. From this time he had listed among the Saints of the Church such revered people as Saints Nektarios of Aegina, Kosmas the Aitolos, Nikodemos the Hagiorite and the Newly-Revealed Raphael, Nicholas and Irene of Lesvos. While still the Metropolitan of Philadelphia, Bartholomew published an article on the importance of this development, and when he became Patriarch, recognizing its great value as an inspiration for the flock of Christ, he continued this great work. Monk Christophoros Panagiotopoulos, the so-called "Papoulakos", Has Been Proposed for Canonization by the Church of Greece to the Ecumenical Patriarchate

With much joy, the Sacred Metropolis of Kalavryta and Aegialia has informed its pious people that the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece, during its session on May 11, 2023, decided to forward to the Ecumenical Patriarchate for final approval the proposal of the Metropolis of Kalavryta regarding the canonization of the Venerable Monk Christophoros Panagiotopoulos, the so-called "Papoulakos" (+ 1861), from Armpounas of Kalavryta, who was a "chosen vessel" of the Lord during the difficult period of the 19th century to be a new Apostle of Orthodoxy to the people of Greece.

Metropolitan Hieronymos of Kalavryta and Aegialia has expressed his heartfelt and grateful thanks on his own behalf and on behalf of his flock to His Beatitude Archbishop Hieronymos of Athens and all Greece and the Seven Members of the Permanent Holy Synod for the solemn approval of the canonization proposal in question. His Eminence Metropolitan Kallinikos of Artis, a Regular Member of the Synodal Committee, drafted the above-mentioned theologically documented and highly detailed proposal.

Elder Gerasimos Mikragiannanitis and Ecumenical Patriarch Jeremiah I Have Been Canonized By the Ecumenical Patriarchate

Today, the 10th of January 2023, the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate made the decision to register Elder Gerasimos Mikragiannanitis and Ecumenical Patriarch Jeremiah I in the list of saints of the Orthodox Church.
