Having entered the Christmas season, we ask those who find the work of the Mystagogy Resource Center beneficial to them to help us continue our work with a generous financial gift as you are able. As an incentive, we are offering the following booklet.

In 1909 the German philosopher Arthur Drews wrote a book called "The Myth of Christ", which New Testament scholar Bart D. Ehrman has called "arguably the most influential mythicist book ever produced," arguing that Jesus Christ never existed and was simply a myth influenced by more ancient myths. The reason this book was so influential was because Vladimir Lenin read it and was convinced that Jesus never existed, thus justifying his actions in promoting atheism and suppressing the Orthodox Church in the Soviet Union. Moreover, the ideologues of the Third Reich would go on to implement the views of Drews to create a new "Aryan religion," viewing Jesus as an Aryan figure fighting against Jewish materialism.

Due to the tremendous influence of this book in his time, George Florovsky viewed the arguments presented therein as very weak and easily refutable, which led him to write a refutation of this text which was published in Russian by the YMCA Press in Paris in 1929. This apologetic brochure titled "Did Christ Live? Historical Evidence of Christ" was one of the first texts of his published to promote his Neopatristic Synthesis, bringing the patristic heritage to modern historical and cultural conditions. With the revival of these views among some in our time, this text is as relevant today as it was when it was written.

Never before published in English, it is now available for anyone who donates at least $20 to the Mystagogy Resource Center upon request (please specify in your donation that you want the book). Thank you.

Saint Anastasios Gordios Considered the Psalter an Antibiotic Against Disease

As the inhabitants of Agrafa recounted from generation to generation, their physician and guardian Saint Anastasios Gordios (who reposed on June 7, 1729) never forgot them. Along with the herbs and medical prescriptions he administered, he asked the family to observe a certain prayer rule, which mainly concerned the reading of Psalms. And the combination of the two brought healing to every patient. The mothers begged the Saint many times to grant his blessing to their children. And this because they realized that this blessing of the Saint had great power. It was enough for the healing of their child! He, however, out of humility, provided, along with his blessing, the necessary herb and the rule of prayer. He was always accustomed to saying that prayer saves!

To this day, the old people of Agrafa speak of the doctor Anastasios who considered and perceived the Sacred Psalter, which he knew by heart, as a powerful antibiotic weapon against every disease!

“The demons cannot bear to hear the Psalms of David. The Prophet-King David comes and cleanses the field of our soul, so that abundant fruitfulness is ensured to the glory of the Triune God. The Psalms of David cleanse all the little thorns that we have not removed with the Mystery of Divine Confession. For the prophet and king David first recommends devotion and faith in God! And unwavering trust in God the Father and in His begotten Son and our Savior Jesus Christ and in the Holy Spirit liberates us. It turns us into lions. It makes us invulnerable, courageous and bold in the face of the beast of Islam (the Turks), who like Goliath terrorizes and holds our blessed race in slavery. Our race will be freed only when we put our faith in Christ before the good of freedom. First of all, our struggle must be for the Holy Faith of Christ. The result of this struggle will be the freedom of the homeland!”

Saint Anastasios, from the above, it is obvious how much importance he attached to the return of Christians to the evangelical and patristic teachings, and for this reason, to this day, the people of Agrafa consider him to have been one of the inspirers and pillars of the revolution of 1821.
