Having entered the Christmas season, we ask those who find the work of the Mystagogy Resource Center beneficial to them to help us continue our work with a generous financial gift as you are able. As an incentive, we are offering the following booklet.

In 1909 the German philosopher Arthur Drews wrote a book called "The Myth of Christ", which New Testament scholar Bart D. Ehrman has called "arguably the most influential mythicist book ever produced," arguing that Jesus Christ never existed and was simply a myth influenced by more ancient myths. The reason this book was so influential was because Vladimir Lenin read it and was convinced that Jesus never existed, thus justifying his actions in promoting atheism and suppressing the Orthodox Church in the Soviet Union. Moreover, the ideologues of the Third Reich would go on to implement the views of Drews to create a new "Aryan religion," viewing Jesus as an Aryan figure fighting against Jewish materialism.

Due to the tremendous influence of this book in his time, George Florovsky viewed the arguments presented therein as very weak and easily refutable, which led him to write a refutation of this text which was published in Russian by the YMCA Press in Paris in 1929. This apologetic brochure titled "Did Christ Live? Historical Evidence of Christ" was one of the first texts of his published to promote his Neopatristic Synthesis, bringing the patristic heritage to modern historical and cultural conditions. With the revival of these views among some in our time, this text is as relevant today as it was when it was written.

Never before published in English, it is now available for anyone who donates at least $20 to the Mystagogy Resource Center upon request (please specify in your donation that you want the book). Thank you.

Saint Eumenios Saridakis and the Drought of 1993

By Monk Simon

At the beginning of the 1990's, our country* was plagued by drought. The authorities were worried about a major water shortage, and the media had added a water bulletin to the news reports. Every day they told us that Lake Marathon** had so many cubic meters of water, which was enough for so many days. They recommended us not to waste water needlessly and to take various measures to limit its consumption.***

Saint Eumenios Saridakis (+ 1999) from the Leper Hospital of the Municipality of Agia Varvara was hospitalized at that time in Evangelismos, for about three months, seriously ill and with the prospect of the doctors amputating his leg. On the day of Great Saturday, in the morning, he told me to take him and go to the Metropolis to attend church, since we had previously received permission to leave the hospital.

Afterwards, we went to offer our veneration at Penteli Monastery and at Saint Panteleimon in Nea Penteli. Returning, he asked me if Lake Marathon is nearby. After I answered in the affirmative, he said to me:

"Can we go there?"

When we arrived, Father was walking on the dam and blessing the lake with the sign of the cross and saying many and various prayers. I was trying to be as close to him as possible, because I was afraid that he might fall, since his leg was very heavy. However, when I got very close to him, he stopped praying and said to me: "You know, when the lake is filled with water, with a lot of water, they will start pouring from the sides, from what are called overflows."

And I said to him: "Very well Father," and I left him and he moved away a little while he continued to bless with the sign of the cross the lake and say many prayers. Then we returned to the hospital.

After two or three days, some female students visited Father Eumenios to receive his blessing.

As we were told later, all the time they were there, Father was looking out of the window, waving his hands and saying continuously:

"What a beautiful rain! What a beautiful rain! My my, the rain! Lots of rain! Lots of rain!” and they said to themselves, with their thoughts, that Father had probably been affected by his illness, because there was not even a cloud in the sky.

In a few days it started to rain torrentially, day and night, and then we realized what had happened. Our Father, with his prayers, opened the heavens and let out the rain. It was the spring of 1993 and it had not been raining normally for about three years, so the authorities decided to bring water with water tankers for the water supply of Athens.
